Cialis® is the brand name for the drug Tadalafil. Tadalafil is a type of medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition where men find it difficult to get or maintain an erection.

Tadalafil is the active ingredient in Cialis®. Cialis® was originally patented and sold by Eli Lilly. It is Health Canada-approved to treat ED and urinary symptoms due to BPH. After the patent expired in 2018, Health Canada gave permission to other drug companies to manufacture a generic version of Cialis®. Generic drugs act the same way in the body and are expected to produce the same effects as the original brand-name drug. Generic drugs are generally much cheaper than the original brand name drug, and most drugs prescribed in Canada are generic.

Cialis® works by increasing blood flow to the penis so you can get and keep an erection.

Cialis® is the brand name of tadalafil. In addition to the active ingredient, tadalafil, Cialis® contains the following inactive ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, iron oxide, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate, talc, titanium dioxide, and triacetin.

When taken as-needed and at a higher dose, Cialis® typically starts working within 30-60 minutes, so you will need to take it about an hour before sex to give it time to kick in. However, when Cialis® is taken daily and at a lower dose, it may take a few days to build up in your system. Cialis® and other PDE5 inhibitors can open blood vessels, enabling blood flow to the penis to get and maintain an erection. Medications that make it easier for blood to flow, can also lower blood pressure. If you have any severe side effects after taking more than the recommended amount, or even after taking the amount of medicine prescribed to you, seek out emergency medical attention immediately.

Cialis® is not a treatment for premature ejaculation, so it usually won’t impact the amount of time you can have sex for before you ejaculate.

Cialis® won’t increase desire or help you feel sexually aroused when you otherwise wouldn’t be interested in sex. Cialis® simply makes it easier to get an erection when you’re already sexually aroused.

Cialis® does not make you bigger. By relaxing the blood vessels around the penis, Cialis® and other PDE5 inhibitors may help you get and maintain an erection, but this process will do nothing for your size.

Having more blood flowing in there might make it feel bigger. More blood flowing to the penis can give you a firmer erection that may alter the sexual experience for you and your partner.

As you age, it is normal to see erectile function decrease. As a result, you may need more medication to see the same results. In some cases, erectile function may also worsen due to the progression of the underlying disease that is causing ED (e.g., diabetes, vascular disease).
